Pure Sensation is the simplest mental action. It is the first response of
the Mind to the World. Pure Sensation contains no suggestions of,
or associations with, past experience. Memory plays no part in it. For the
duration of a Pure Sensation it is not named, classed, or compared. No
propositions about it are uttered. Perception is dependent on
Sensation for its existence but Sensation does not need Perception.

The relationship between the World and Sensation is immediate, direct,
automatic, and natural. The experience is complete and whole within
itself, needing no qualification. A flash of light or an abrupt sound is
manifest, apparent and self-evident. In nature these qualities are
common but in human psychology they are rare and special.
